The Regional Municipality of Durham, Economic Development and Tourism Department is hosting The Art of Transition symposium on Nov. 12, 2009.
A forum for creative minds, The Art of Transition will explore the uniqueness of Durham Region’s communities and brainstorm strategies to evolve our local economy. Through networking, dialogues and engagement, the symposium will inspire new ideas, partnerships and opportunities for transitioning Durham Region into a new, creative economy.
The symposium will bring together creative thinkers from diverse backgrounds: artists, business owners, entrepreneurs, inventors, agriculturalists, politicians and some of today’s finest thinkers.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Richard Florida, director of the Martin Prosperity Institute at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, author of Who's Your City? and founder of Creative Class Group.
As Dr. Florida points out, attracting and retaining members of the “creative class” through the development of talent clusters can create significant economic advantages. With this in mind, The Art of Transition will explore Durham Region’s ability to retain and attract creative and talented people.
This is your invitation to become involved with an essential initiative in the transformation of Durham Region. This is your chance to connect, contribute, collaborate and create new prosperity in the region by capitalizing on our existing resources and technology, and our diverse and talented population.
The Art of Transition will be held on Nov. 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Ajax Convention Centre. Registration fee is $95 plus GST.

Hello all Stewards and Friends of Lake Scugog:
THIS IS A SPECIAL BULLETIN FROM THE LAKE STEWARDS
ABOUT OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEERING
So many of you have spoken to us about doing some hands-on volunteer work to help improve the lake and its watershed. Well, what follows is the beginning of a mother-load of opportunities, some for now and some for later in the year. So, print this off, and then make some calls to commit yourself to action.
Stewards and Friends of Lake Scugog Volunteer Opportunties.pdf
The Scugog Lake Stewards are pleased to announce that they have received funding for
a one year pilot project aimed at assessing the value of introducing greater numbers of
Milfoil Weevils, E. Lecontei, into Lake Scugog. Milfoil Weevils will act as a biological
control for the invasive aquatic plant, Eurasian Watermilfoil which has reduced the
recreational potential and ecological health of Lake Scugog. The Baagwating
Community Association is providing funds through a generous grant and will be
partners with the Scugog Lake Stewards in this program.

Navigating a Tight Economy
8 Week MasterMind Group
In Port Perry – Above Brocks
Begins Friday, March 13 from 1-3 pm
Have you ever thought…?
• “I need help getting through this tight economy.”
• “Where do I start?”
• “I don’t need more time – I need more focus.”
If you’re ready to reach or exceed your goals and to allow your passion to overcome your fear of change then a Mastermind Group may be just what you’re looking for.
MasterMind participants act as catalysts for growth and operate as supportive colleagues. You’ll find energy, commitment, and excitement in a MasterMind Group.
What Will You Get From It?
- Experience, skill and confidence
- Real progress in your business and personal life
- An instant and valuable support network
- A sense of shared endeavour - there are others out there!
- A chance to design your business and life the way you want them to be, not as you've been told they "should" be
How Does It Work?
In this particular group we will explore a specific theme – navigating this tight economy. There will be a coaching/teaching element as well as a ‘master mind’ portion. For those unfamiliar with Master Mind groups it is simply a way of tapping in to the experience and resources available within the group.
Expect accountability, diverse ideas, solutions, feedback, growth, change and cheer. At each meeting you will share best practices, and be held accountable for a SMART goal. Plus, you'll receive my coaching and unparalleled resource base. And, as a coach facilitator, I keep the group focused and on track.

For immediate release:
Several months ago Scugog Mayor Marilyn Pearce of Port Perry asked the North Durham Photographers' Association to photographically capture some of the barns of Durham region, as many are rapidly deteriorating. Since this request, the group has been photographing a variety of barns from all over Durham. Now the results are ready to be seen by the public and the NDPA is now proud to present it's exhibit: "Barns of Durham Region". The show is running for the complete month of March at The Piano Café and Inn, 217 Queen St., Port Perry, ON!
As members of the NDPA were setting up their exhibit on March 1, Mr. Gord Brown of Scugog Island came into the Piano Café to pick up a coffee-to-go and just happened to find his own barn displayed as part of the show. Attached is a pic of Mr. Brown admiring the portrait of his own barn.
The NDPA is a group of photographers whose membership ranges from professional to novice with all members supporting and sharing their strengths through a variety of outings, guest speakers and workshops. Meetings are held monthly and new members are welcome. A $10 charge will apply to non-members, refundable if they join. For more information visit
WWW.NDPA.CA or e-mail
info@ndpa.ca
The next meeting of the NDPA is on Tuesday March 10th at 6:30 PM at the Scugog Community Centre at 1655 Reach Street near the corner of Reach and Old Simcoe in Port Perry.
All the Best,
James (Jim) P. Effer

Hi Folks
The Port Perry Snowmobile Club is pleased to announce the start of the 08/09 PPSC snowmobiling season, with our annual Open House. We certainly hope to see some of you there, to usher in the new season with us and 200 to 300 other local snowmobile enthusiast, and many from other areas across the province. (see attached poster)
09-PPSC-OpenHouse2 (2).tif
Also we would like to extend the offer of a link and web ad on our website for any who wish to become a PPSC club sponsor. The cost for a season is a donation of anything we can use as a prize for our annual PPSC Charity Poker Run, no prize is too small or too big. Here is a link to some pictures on our forum site from last years awesome Poker Run, that helped us raise $2280, which we split with the Port Perry Hospital Foundation
http://ppsc.19.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=557
Our home page and interactive forum website receive an average of 60,000 hits a month from late Sept to mid March, and 35,000 hits a month between April and late Sept.
(FYI) As always all our charity events proceeds are split 50% charity, and 50% to help support the club. The charity is selected by club members votes, voting is based on consideration for the most needed charity’s near the time of event, local or national, we found this was the best way to get the money to where it is needed the most, when it is needed the most. We also welcome all event participants and club members to advise us of any charity or persons (victims of circumstance) in dire need, all suggestions will be considered.
Thanks and please feel free to e-mail or call me if you have any questions

Scarecrow flyer 08 Meta4.pdfMeta4 Gallery is once again hosting Scugog's Annual Scarecrow Contest! This will be the third annual contest, open to businesses, families, community groups and individuals. It's time to start working on your creation!
This year we want all the scarecrows out on the street or in your window by October 3, in time for the Gates Open/Doors Open and local harvest events taking place in Port Perry on October 4 & 5. Judging will take place the week of October 6 (actual date to be confirmed).
Attached is the poster, which we will be distributing throughout the community.
In addition to the contest, we are helping with a Scarecrow Building Workshop to take place Sunday, October 5 at 10:30 a.m. in the municipal parking lot. Our goal is to create 20 scarecrows for the downtown area. Families and visitors will be invited to pitch in and add their personal touch. There is no charge for this workshop.
For the workshop, the BIA is looking for the following donations:
- old clothing
- gloves & mittens
- wigs
- hats
- old pool noodles (for the arms)
- tights or leggings
- scarves
- anything a well-dressed scarecrow might like to wear! (old jewellery, hand-bags etc.)
- rolls of packing tape
- bags of shredded paper or plastic (eg. dry cleaning bags or garment wrap)
We are hoping to have all the support structures made in advance (with donated lumber and labour). We plan to make no more than 20 scarecrows that morning. Visitors will not be taking them home -- they will be used for street decoration.
You can drop off your donations to Meta4 Gallery, Luke's, Brock's or the Visitor & Business Centre.
For more information, please contact Meta4 Gallery.
Thanks!

Kawartha Conservation awards first round of Scugog WATER Fund grants for 2008
Applications still being accepted for projects that help improve health of Lake Scugog and watershed
(Scugog, July 31, 2008) Kawartha Conservation, in partnership with the Township of Scugog and the Region of Durham, is pleased to announce that it has awarded over $8,500 through the Scugog WATER Fund in the first round of funding for 2008. This funding is supporting projects that have a total value of over $24,500.
All of the projects funded are within the area where the Kawartha watershed overlaps the Region of Durham. This includes sections of the Township of Scugog, the Township of Brock and the Municipality of Clarington (see map).
The Scugog Water And Terrain Environmental Restoration (WATER) Fund provides money for projects that help improve the health of Lake Scugog and its surrounding watershed. Eligible projects include erosion control, private septic system upgrades, clean water diversion, well decommissioning, well upgrades, manure storage and beneficial management practices.
Through the Lake Scugog Environmental Management Plan (LSEMP), Kawartha Conservation has determined that shoreline erosion, yard and agricultural runoff and septic system effluent are contributing large amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen into the lake and its tributaries. These two nutrients are mainly responsible for promoting weed growth and poor water quality in Lake Scugog. While these nutrients are found naturally in water, they are consistently above government water quality guidelines, often by two and three times in some areas.
Proposed projects must be within the Kawartha watershed in Durham Region, highlighted in light yellow on the map above.
Unsealed, abandoned wells and improperly sealed or maintained wells can also impact water quality. These provide a direct link between surface pollutants and groundwater that flows into other wells, lakes and tributaries. Common surface pollutants include yard and farm runoff, which may contain pesticides, fertilizers and animal wastes containing bacteria such as E. coli; and driveway runoff, which may contain automotive fluids.
While most eligible projects can receive funding of up to 50% of the costs, well decommissioning qualifies for up to 100%.
"Everyone wants to protect the health of the watershed and their well water, but not everyone has the resources for needed upgrades," says Kristie Virgoe, Kawartha Conservation Manager of Environmental Protection & Restoration. "Each project under the Scugog WATER fund really does make a difference, and I hope more people will take advantage of the available funds."
Kawartha Conservation accepts applications year round, and awards grants in July and October. For more information or an application, contact Sasha Lambrinos at 705.328.2271 ext. 224, or visit www.kawarthaconservation.com.

Garbage cleaned up in East Cross Forest
(Durham Region, July 13, 2008) More than 80 people participated in the 2008 East Cross Forest Community Clean Up yesterday, collecting a massive amount of illegally dumped garbage.
Volunteers and Kawartha Conservation staff filled 3 40 cubic yard bins with everything from plastic bumpers and hubcaps to shingles and broken window frames. They also filled 3 drums with hazardous wastes such as motor oil, anti-freeze and paint, and pulled out 100 tires, 3 burnt out, rusted cars and 9,000 lbs of scrap metal.
This is the second year that Kawartha Conservation has held a community clean up event in East Cross Forest, located in the southeast corner of Scugog Township.
"We were overwhelmed and very pleased with the support of so many individuals, groups, local sponsors, and local councils again this year," said Kristie Virgoe, Kawartha Conservation's Manager of Environmental Protection and Restoration. "People are eager to help restore this magnificent piece of the Oak Ridges Moraine, and ensure its preservation for ecologically sustainable uses."
In addition to the garbage dumped on the property since the last clean up, Kawartha Conservation acquired an additional 282 acres that needed cleaning.
Current land holdings are now 832 acres, which will combine to form a new conservation area that is expected to open to the public in the spring of 2009.
Among the volunteers at this year's clean up were East Cross Forest neighbours, community members and members from the Cartwright Dyno's Snowmobile Club, Long Sault Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club, Port Perry Snowmobile Club, Durham 4x4 Club, and the Ontario Federation of Four Wheel Drive Recreationists.
Scugog Mayor Marilyn Pearce, Scugog Councillor Lynn Philip Hodgson and Clarington Councillor Ron Hooper also volunteered their time.
The Community Clean Up received funding from Durham Region, the Township of Scugog and the Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation, plus donations of water, food and supplies from Culligan (Peterborough), M & M Meat Shop (Port Perry and Lindsay), Kawartha Wholesale Bakery (Lindsay), and Tri Care Sanitation Supplies (Lindsay).
"It was a great day," said Virgoe. "With all of the garbage cleared, you can see how beautiful this place really is. Everyone's looking forward to when East Cross Forest Conservation Area is opened to the public next year."
For more information about the East Cross Forest initiative or to be added to the mailing list, visit www.kawarthaconservation.com or call (705) 328.2271.

Energy Conservation Week
"Of 300 communities participating in Earth Hour at the end of March, 150 were in Canada: 80 of those in Ontario. This says that our hearts and minds are pointing in the right direction when it comes to conservation. But now it's time to convert a one-hour international experience into a more durable commitment that serves the interest of Ontarians.
Energy Conservation Week provides a stepping stone to the next level. It enables us to focus on getting ready for our summer peak demand, reminds us of the specific targets that are upcoming in 2010 and 2025, and it keeps us on track for our true goal: A 'culture of conservation.'
Take Part. Take Action."

Dear Fellow Scugog Chamber of Commerce Members:
In support of the 10,0000 Canadian Children currently battling Cancer and their families,on June 2 of this year I will be embarking on one of the most challenging and most likely rewarding endeavors of my lifetime.
I will be cycling across this beautiful country with 49 other "Sears National Coast to Coast" Riders. We are beginning our Journey in Vancouver and will arrive in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 20. All in all, 19 days covering 7600 Kilometers! As a National Soloist, I will be responsible to ride 4600 Kilometers of the Journey, approximately 250 Km per day. To put that distance into perspective, it would be the equivalent of cycling from Uxbridge to Kingston every day for 19 days.
I have been training very seriously for 20 to 25 hours a week to prepare for this ride, eating the right foods and keeping properly hydrated. When you add running my business and conducting fundraising activities, well you can imagine it leaves very little time for anything else!
The Coast-to-Coast Foundation was recently featured in the Toronto Star as one of the
number one charities because donations made directly by cheque or on-line to support
a rider go directly to the cause - that's right every penny of every dollar.
I also have a number of personal expenses associated with being on this ride as we have to pay a fee to participate in the ride, along with accessories for training, clothing, flights to Vancouver and home again from Halifax and if you can help with these costs, it would be fantastic. I will be covering some of these costs from my own business, Sierra Circuits Inc. but the total expenses will amount to $6000.00 to 7,000.00, which is more than my business can afford to spend, especially when you consider that I will be away from the office for almost a month! So I am seeking a sponsorship from a business or individual to help cover some of my own costs.
I will be at the up-coming breakfast meeting on March 27th, where I hope to meet a number of you and if you wish I can provide some more detail and answer any questions that you may have. I will also have literature on hand for those who would like more information on the ride.
Anything that you, as members of the Chamber, can do to help with this wonderful cause would be greatly appreciated. Cancer has touched my immediate family and my extended family and relatives in the past and continues to do so as I write this. I am sure that this is something we all have in common. And a child with Cancer.... that's a whole other thing to me.
