Where To Find Township of Scugog

The Township of Scugog is situated on the shores of Lake Scugog, just 45 minutes north of downtown Toronto and is a mid-way point for travelers from the Windsor-to-Ottawa corridor. Four season tourism plays a very integral role in our communities. In the heart of Scugog, in the town of Port Perry, we have a centralized visitor and business centre across from Lake Scugog where inquiries from all over Ontario, Canada and the world flow through the centre. The Scugog Chamber of Commerce currently provide the resources that the centre offers.

The Scugog Township is just 45 minutes to Lester B. Pearson International Airport in Toronto. Pearson is Canada’s busiest airport, serving more than thirty-one million passengers annually and is serviced by all global airlines. By the year 2020 – the number of travelers passing through the airport’s gates is expected to reach 50 million. To the east of Scugog, the Peterborough Airport, is thirty-five minutes and to the south-east, the Oshawa Airport, is a full service commercial aviation facility, which is within twenty-five minutes of Scugog Lake.

Matt Somerville

Sommerville Farms

Matt is a designer, urban planner, heritage advocate, fifth generation farmer, husband and a small business owner. In 2003 at the age of 23 I ran for Ward 1 Councillor. While he didn’t get elected, the experience drew him towards the issues of urban planning, so much so that in 2005 he returned to planning school. Upon graduation Matt was hired by one of Toronto’s top architectural firms where he assisted in the creation of both the Port Perry Downtown Waterfront Revitalization Project and led development of the Downtown Port Perry HCD.

Given his agricultural background, much of his professional work revolves around the intersection of heritage, economic development and cultural vitality. Two Blokes Cider emerged in 2018 as a means of integrating these personal and professional interests with the goals of breathing new life into our century family farm and helping to push the agritourism potential of this area.

In 2019 Matt returned to Port Perry with a thriving business and an orchard now in its 5th year of growth. While the pandemic raged, construction of the cidery did not stop and Matt opened to the public on June 18, 2021.

Matt is eager to foster an inclusive space at the cidery that contributes to the area’s economic and cultural vitality. Karey-Anne Large

Executive Director

Bio

While still working in the corporate world in 2005, Karey Anne Large started making cakes out of her home kitchen. After discovering her passion for cake decorating, she dove in headfirst, leaving her corporate career behind and opening her first retail location in 2011. Born and raised in Whitby, Large chose the historic downtown Whitby to open up her dream shop – Kake Kreations. After, a tragic fire at her Brock Street location, she persevered and moved Kake Kreations to its second location on Dundas Street in 2015.

Large saw many sweet successes during her cake decorating journey, including winning the 2015 Parents Choice Award for Best Cakes in Durham Region and the Whitby Chamber of Commerce’s (WCC) New Business of the Year in 2016. She was also the only Canadian featured on the Food Network’s Cake Wars and was awarded 1st runner up.

In 2017, Large made the difficult decision to close up Kake Kreations and step into the position as the Executive Director of the Downtown Whitby Business Improvement Area (DWBIA), combining her experience as a small business owner with her love for the Town of Whitby.

With more than 40 years as a Whitby resident, Large sees the importance of giving back and has held such positions as Past President of the Whitby Chamber of Commerce and a past member of its Signature Events Planning Committee. She is also a member of Whitby Rotary Sunrise as the current club service director and chair for Whitby Ribfest, Large has also sat on the Whitby Heritage Advisory Committee, Lakeridge Health Gala Planning Committee, and sat as the co-chair for Mayor Mitchells Community Development Fund Planning Committee in 2022. Large has also sat on the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association’s Board of Directors and Advocacy Committee. Her dedication to volunteerism was recognized in 2019 when she received the WCC’s second-ever Jim Lavelle Award, inspired by the extraordinary contributions of the late Jim Lavelle and the four values he deemed most important: commitment, determination, innovation, and compassion.
